Do side projects matter? | Edition 84
Side projects are low-cost, (potentially) high-value experiments that students can create in their free time using no-code tools/self-development. While most side-project are just for ‘fun’, some end up being a strong point during an interview.
This is a 3 part series on the importance of side projects. Today, we take a stab at making tech-focused side projects, right from conceiving an idea to implementing it.
💡Idea Phase - the battle of choices
The human mind is mostly restless, countless thoughts running across your mind all the while. Chances are, quite a few of them will be ideas, and mostly (all) of them will sound convincing enough to start working on it.
But, here’s the deal: it doesn’t really matter! Your idea is just raw clay - it still requires to be given shape. The most important thing here is to start off.
👨💻Implementation of Tech Stuff
This phase is a 3 step process: Finalizing your tech stack → Development → Testing.
While choosing your tech stack, a good idea is to use frameworks/tools which have community support and can scale (taking the best case of your project going viral). Very recently, GPT-3 based projects found their moment of truth very soon, and most of them have ended being very popular.
🗣Going Live and Seeking early-feedback
This phase is the same for all side-projects; seek feedback relentlessly and iterate your project in the initial few days/weeks of your release.
The most popular platforms to launch are Product Hunt, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Stackoverflow/ HackerNews seem to be the best for early feedback.
The ultimate outcome of any side-project is the satisfaction of converting an idea to a reality, all by yourself. If you pull it off once, chances are you are not going to stop there.
In the upcoming newsletter, we will deep dive into making ‘No-code’ projects, for free!
Meanwhile, go enroll yourself for the GitHub Student Developer Pack if you haven’t already.
